Conceptual sketch I made of a dropsuit.

Made because me and my friends were collaborating on a sci-fi world-building project.

Not bad, it's pretty good; does have a bit of a halo inspired look to it. What a good suggestion I can give is to look at all the past and current military application of airbourne divisions, or even better HALO/ HAHO jumpers (HIgh Altitude-Low Opening, High Altitude-High Opening). From there move into existing sci-fi tings and what is kept and/or what should be improved. Also another helpful suggestion is what should a dropsuit be, what should it have and what it shouldn't have. from what I get fromt he first look is a space-borne combat suit. A drop suit should look like these trooper are ready to be deployed deep behind enemy lines, strike hard and fast, and be extremely mobile. Or in the other direction of being frontline hiters dropping into heavy fighting but are instantly mobile without any cmbersome dropsuit to restrain them. If this is for a project this should act as a start off point to grow from cause there's so much potential you got here.

Hahaha! that's some great insight! Thanks a lot! :D

Slight background:
These combat dropsuits are actually very dextrous. They're mechanism is based on negative feedback and amplification. Basically, the suit detects the movement made by the wearer and replicates it, only with tenfold power. In other words, what the wearer does, the suit does better. This allows the trooper to move naturally (ie. dancing or whatever) without being encumbered, nor feeling the weight. Also, other functions, like the jump pack, are automated; if you jump, the suit automatically hits the jump jets, making your jump more powerful. When you're about to land, it uses the jets to cushion your landing. Or, you could activate the jets in mid-jump to give you a "double jump." Lol!

Robert Heinlein's book, Starship Troopers, has a more comprehensive explanation of a powered suit. I've also listed that as one of my inspirations.

Starship troopers is a great source for inspiration, you have many sources here and there that's hard to pin point where your inspiration coems from which is kind of good, because it makes it more original. Hmm...the way you describe your dropsuit trooper it sounds more like a heavy assualt trooper. The jump jets by the way you describe it seems more like they are for the trooper to close in wiht the enemy line as quickly as possible. the sear size of the suit itself looks more for seige warfare and frontal assualts than a dropsuit. You should take a look at starship troopers: roughneck chronicles. I guess one of my source inspiration comes from warhammer 40000 with sace marines and the drop pods. Just the image of giant metal pods decending from the heavens and smashing into enemy lines and disgorging a squad of space marines leaves quite a fantastic image. Same from 'roughneck chronicles' armoured suits dropping troopers from dropships is really cool. But yeah the look overall seems like a heavy assualt soldier.

Yeah, their role is of a heavy assault trooper, similar to the Space Marines in W40k, but I was kinda thinking on the lines of a highly mobile force, not a gro-po mob like the Adeptus Astartes. It won't be necessary to close in with the enemy 'cus they'll be dropped in the midst of the enemy lines. The jump jets are for added mobility to compensate for the drop suits' slow groundspeed. The roughneck chronicles was a great show, but they were not what I had in mind for my Stygians.

As for the drop pods, they would be dropped from fast-flying shuttles, similar to the Roughneck Chronicles, but with the individual pods more similar in function to the ST novel rather than the RC.

I'll submit another sketch of their combat doctrines when the 'net gets better.

Thanks!

Well it sounds pretty good. It's probably best to start ff from the basic foot soldier then into something this complex. that's how the space marines first we're created and then became more iconic based of the simple foot soldier to then more elaborate characters.

Dwahahaha! Yeah, it's got a few chinks, but if the trooper stays mobile and doesn't do anything stupid; that wouldn't be much of a problem. Thanks!
