Kanic Hellions Concept

Two veteran Guardsmen from the 1st Kanic Hellions; a Demolitions Expert and a Grenadier.

The Kanic Hellions are a Imperial Guard regiment whose background I am currently conceptualizing. They work similar to the Elysian Drop Troops, but favor Valkyries more than grav chutes. Their line troops pack a lot of heavy weapons, mostly mortars and heavy bolters, to occupy a portion of the enemy force. The regiment's Grenadiers and attached Storm Troopers then focus on putting the hurt where it counts while supported by rocket pod-toting Valkyries and (hopefully) accurate mortar fire. Basically, the tactic involved is to grab as much Victory Points as possible in the first few turns.

Putting aside the theoretical stuff, a lot of it is mostly up to the dice (which is usually a bad thing) and deployment. Getting a Valkyrie shot down early in the game or having a mortar barrage scatter on top of a Grenadier squad really cost me a lot in some dry runs. Still, pulling off the "combined arms" maneuver successfully is really satisfying. Mortar barrage, then a rocket strafe, followed by a shotgun/flamer/heavy flamer fusilade from the Grenadiers to take care of the lucky cover saves. The Storm Troopers, with their hotshot lasguns, would focus on harder targets like Space Marines.

Artistically, the troops are based on the old Cadian models with minor details changed such as the body armor and craploads of pouches. The air assault tactics fluff was inspired by the 1st Air Cav in 'Nam and Fireforce tactics used during the Rhodesian border war.
